A brand-new journey into the ‘Star Trek’ universe is finally happening and this time, it is being steered by two filmmakers known for mixing adventure and heart. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the duo behind ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ and the hit ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ screenplay, have officially signed on to write and direct the next ‘Star Trek’ film, according to a report by ‘Variety’.
This latest project will not continue the story from the JJ Abrams reboot films. That means fans should not expect Chris Pine or the rest of that cast to return.

Pine interestingly had worked with Goldstein and Daley on their ‘D&D’ movie. But this time the filmmakers are charting a completely different course. The new film will stand on its own and has no link to any earlier movies, current TV shows, or other ‘Star Trek’ ideas that were once in development.

The plot remains a secret locked tighter than a Starfleet vault, but Paramount wants a fresh start for the franchise on the big screen.
The road to making another ‘Star Trek’ movie has been long and full of twists. Since ‘Star Trek Beyond’ released in 2016, several attempts to launch a new film have started with excitement and ended abruptly. At one point, Chris Hemsworth was almost ready to return as Captain Kirk’s father even though his character died in the 2009 movie. Quentin Tarantino also came close to directing a wild, gangster-themed ‘Star Trek’ set in a 1930s-style world. This concept thrilled fans but never took off.
More recently, filmmakers Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman each reached advanced stages of development. Their movies were so close that sets actually began construction. But both projects eventually shelved with Hawley moving on to FX’s ‘Alien: Earth’ and Shakman shifting to Marvel’s upcoming ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’.
Now, Goldstein and Daley are the next pair reviving the blockbuster franchise. They are popular for their sharp humour and clever storytelling, seen in films like ‘Game Night’, the ‘Vacation’ reboot, ‘Horrible Bosses’, and ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2’.
